On Sunday, Katie and her mother took our dogs for a walk. They had finished walking and were standing outside the house talking to our next door neighbor when a dog new to the neighborhood walked by. We've seen this dog before and he's really hyper, lots of barking and snarling and jumping whenever he sees another dog. His owner always manages to just keep him under control. But even his appearance on the street is enough to get Bolleke, who is a hyper-dominant dog, riled up, and that's usually enough to get Lola going, too.
So of course, when this dog walked by, it was lunging and snarling and Bolleke was ready to go explain the correct neighborhood heirarchy and let Katie know this with his own lunging and snarling. Katie thought she had him pretty well contained (and she did, with regard to the stranger dog), but he suddenly decided to take it out on Lola. Our neighbor jumped in and pulled Bolleke back (he's a very, very strong dog and it's hard to control both him and Lola at the same time), but not before he tore Lola's eye open from the corner for about an inch.
Lola ended up having to get seven stitches, and has to wear a cone when we can't watch her. Fortunately, I'm home all day, so she doesn't have to wear one most of the time, but she does at night. Surprisingly, she's very, very accomodating of the cone. She doesn't even budge when I put it on her, and she doesn't complain about wearing it. She doesn't really fuss with the stitches at all, but we put the cone on to avoid accidental unstitching. The only thing we're not sure about is what will happen this coming week when we board the dogs for our trip to Hawaii. Not because of their interaction (they'll be in separate runs at the kennel), but whether or not she'll have to wear the cone the whole time. Hopefully she won't.
